“At Loyola, faculty across a range of fields pursue research not only as a professional obligation but also as a vocation deeply rooted in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition.”

The lasting impact of research
JESUIT EDUCATION SPRINGS from a tradition that demands high standards, that calls upon us to learn widely and well and then to apply knowledge to foster new ideas, create better solutions, and develop vital answers to human problems.
This is the essence of research and scholarly inquiry at Loyola University Chicago.
As a doctoral university with high research activity, Loyola is categorized as an R2 university in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. At Loyola, faculty across a range of fields pursue research not only as a professional obligation but also as a vocation deeply rooted in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition. Research at Loyola serves as a powerful instrument for positive change. It generates new medical treatments, sheds light on systemic problems, and informs public policy. In an age in which facts can be drowned in a sea of misinformation, research guides us toward clarity and workable solutions.
It is not surprising that great teaching and great research coexist here. We nurture an environment where teaching is a dynamic, interactive process that encourages critical thinking, fosters creativity, and instills a sense of ethical responsibility in our students.
The integration of research and teaching is where a resonant education occurs. Scholars engaged in cutting-edge research bring their discoveries, insights, and enthusiasm into the classroom. Students become active participants in the learning process, witnessing firsthand the excitement of discovery and innovation. This fosters a culture of intellectual curiosity, encouraging students to question, explore, and embark on their own journeys of inquiry and action.
In this issue of Loyola magazine, we highlight faculty research. At our Jesuit, Catholic university, the relationship between great research and great teaching is not merely a philosophical concept—it is the very fabric of our institutional identity. It is a dynamic interplay that invigorates our academic community, creating a space where faith, knowledge, and service intersect, making a profound impact on our students, our society, and our world.
