Students must meet several academic requirements to be admitted into our MS in Data Science program. Here, you'll find a list of requirements and a step-by-step guide to applying to our program for both domestic and international students. Please note that you don't need to finish the complete application in one step; in fact, it is advisable to complete the application is stages.
Academic Requirements for Admission
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
- Minimum "B" average in undergraduate coursework.
- One year of Calculus equivalent to MATH 131 & MATH 132 or MATH 161 & MATH 162
- One course in Introductory Statistics equivalent to STAT 103, STAT 203 or STAT 335.
- One course in data structures equivalent to COMP 231 or COMP 271, preferably with R and/or Python.
Students who are lacking the required Calculus 2, Introductory Statistics course(s) and/or Computer Science course(s) are encouraged to take such course(s) at a local community college or online before an admission decision will be made. Students having only the above minimum mathematics requirements are encouraged via to self-study the basics of double integrals, partial derivatives, and matrix operations.

The following items are required to apply:
- Application Form. Start your application online by using our online application form.
- Personal Statement. We want to know your motivation for continuing your schooling, your career aspirations, and how you believe our program will help you meet your goals. This is submitted through the online application.
- Two Letters of Recommendation. With the exception of one letter, letters of recommendation should typically come from academic sources and should highlight the applicant's quantitative skills and achievements. Exceptions can be made for applicants who have been in the workplace for a number of years, but letters should always focus on quantitative expertise and/or promise.
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. An applicant who attended an institution outside the US must submit an ECE transcript evaluation (general evaluation with grade average).
International Students
- Official TOEFL, IELTS or PTE scores(*). International applicants whose native language is not English are required to have earned a score of at least 79 on the TOEFL examination, 6 on the IELTS examination, 53 on the PTE examination, or 105 on the Duolingo examination.
- Translate your foreign transcripts to the US system. Foreign transcripts should be translated over to the US system using any of the following services: ECE, EP, WES, SpanTran or NACES. The translated GPA must meet the minimum "B" requirement.
